Marian Varsity Basketball Poised for Competitive Season Built on Defense, Leadership, and Sisterhood

The Marian Varsity Basketball program enters the season with confidence, intensity, and a renewed sense of purpose following four strong scrimmages at Livonia Churchill High School. The season also marks an exciting new chapter for the program, as Curt Rotter begins his first year as Marian's head varsity basketball coach.

Early impressions of the team point to a group defined by athleticism, competitive drive, and a shared determination to bring respect back to Marian's name within the Catholic League and across the state of Michigan. "This is a team built on student-athletes who are hungry to compete and want to win championships," said assistant coach Pat Turner.

This year's roster is made up largely of two- and three-sport varsity athletes who thrive on competition and understand what it takes to win. Just as important is the emphasis the team has placed on unity and culture. The players have identified goals that go beyond the scoreboard—growing closer together, becoming sisters in Christ, and building a family-like bond on and off the court rooted in trust, joy, and shared purpose.

On the court, Marian is beginning to establish a clear identity, particularly on the defensive end. The Mustangs have embraced an aggressive, high-energy defensive mindset that allows them to throw multiple defensive looks at opponents within a single quarter. This approach demands communication, accountability, and effort from every player, fostering leadership at all five positions. That same intensity is expected to carry over offensively as the team continues to grow together and play with confidence.

Offensively, Marian is anchored by two senior post players capable of competing with any team in the Catholic League. Getting the ball inside, improving ball handling, reducing turnovers, and committing to rebounding as a team are focal points as the Mustangs look to outwork opponents and win games with toughness. As the season progresses, the coaching staff expects the game to slow down for the group, allowing players to better read the court and embrace a team-first mentality.

At the heart of Marian Basketball is a clearly defined standard for what it means to be a Mustang—one rooted in hard work, full effort, sacrifice, determination, punctuality, and persistence. The players themselves have embraced goals centered on improving every single day, staying healthy and positive, supporting one another through adversity, and helping each other grow in faith.

Several returning and contributing players are expected to play major roles this season. Senior forward and captain Kennedi Marsh (6'1") brings versatility, intensity, and servant leadership to every practice and game. Fellow senior captain Ella Swanson (6'3") provides an elite basketball IQ and a dominant post presence that forces opposing teams to game plan around her. Junior Olivia Rotter, the team's starting point guard, has emerged as the engine of the Mustangs, bringing relentless effort, unselfishness and leadership on both ends of the floor.

Additional contributors will also play key roles this season. Jayla, Frankie, and Maddie Monroe have made a significant sacrifice by stepping away from their primary club sports to commit to basketball, bringing a tremendous competitive spirit to the team. Dréa Gordy and Elizabeth Brikho provide shooting and spacing on the perimeter, while Maddie Sellke adds leadership, enthusiasm, and energy that continue to strengthen the program's culture.

The Mustangs have also seen an early impact from freshman Elizabeth Brikho, who has emerged as a scoring threat with a fearless drive to the basket and a consistent outside shot—an exciting sign for the program's future.

Leadership is anchored by captains Marsh, Swanson, and Rotter, who set the standard for what it means to represent Marian. The team has embraced goals of improving communication, playing with energy as a unit, trusting one another, and winning—and losing—as a team.

The season schedule features several marquee home matchups, including Regina on December 16, Mercy on January 13, and Divine Child on January 16. The Mustangs also look forward to competing in the Catholic League Tournament and beginning their postseason run in the MHSAA District Tournament on March 2.

The team's goals are ambitious and clear: beat Groves, Regina, and Mercy; win districts; compete for a Catholic League title; and ultimately pursue a winning season with championship aspirations at the state level. Underlying all of these goals is a commitment to outworking opponents, rebounding with purpose, and getting better every single day.

As the season gets underway, Marian Varsity Basketball looks forward to representing the Marian community with class, dignity, and pride. Head Coach Curt Rotter shared a heartfelt message as the program turns the page:

"I will be forever grateful to these 12 young women for their dedication and hard work. They have experienced much disruption in their Marian basketball careers due to multiple coaching changes during the last four years. That stops here. The rebuilding of Marian basketball begins with us."

The Mustangs invite students, families, and fans to support them as they compete with toughness, faith, and unity—together as one Mustang family.
