Marian Bowling Midseason Update: Mustangs Rolling Strong with Growth and Team Spirit

The Marian girls bowling team has exceeded expectations this season, demonstrating remarkable improvement, dedication, and team camaraderie. With a roster featuring many sophomores who are just beginning their high school careers, the Mustangs have built both talent and morale that bode well for the future.

"Each match, another girl is bowling her highest game," said Coach Leon Braisted. "The team morale is awesome, and our players really support each other. They're eager to learn, and they'll even tell us when they pick up a spare or strike when we might not be watching."

Biggest Accomplishments and Standout Players

The Mustangs have seen several individual and team highlights this season. Aurelia O'Connor rolled a personal best 180, while Maria Burlingame currently holds the team's highest average. Grace Riga, Julia Matti, Anna Scalise, Ari Stapleton, and last year's MVP Marisa Davis have all been consistent contributors, providing steady performances in every match. One of the season's standout moments came during a Baker match against Mercy, where the Mustangs rolled a team-high score with everyone contributing over 100 — a true showcase of teamwork and skill.

Coach Braisted emphasized the importance of attitude, saying, "Our strengths come from our great attitude. The girls do what we ask, they like to learn, and they support each other. Watching them improve week after week has been incredibly rewarding."

Focus on Improvement and Team Concepts

While the Mustangs are already performing well, they continue to focus on refining their game. A weekly goal has been to improve follow-through after picking up a spare or strike, with every match serving as a learning opportunity. "We do our best in matches," Coach Braisted said. "After scores are tabulated, the girls often realize, 'Hey coach, we could have won today.' We smile and agree — there's no pressure from coaches, just continual improvement."

Team growth has also come from fostering commitment and responsibility off the lanes. While weekend matches are optional, the Mustangs have consistently met their roster needs, allowing them to compete effectively while keeping participation enjoyable. Coach Braisted highlighted that cultivating this sense of accountability is just as important as skill development.

Individual Growth and Memorable Moments

Several players have made notable improvements this season. Ari Stapleton, Millei Derkervorkian, Kate Essaski, Mia Thomas, Ella Clinton, and Berkley Leith have all shown measurable progress, building confidence and consistency in their games. Watching Mia Thomas bowl a 134 and celebrate her improvement with sheer joy was one of many memorable moments.

"Watching Aurelia, Julia, and Maria continue to roll their best games has been inspiring," Coach Braisted said. "Every week, we see girls pushing themselves to new personal bests. It's not just about the scores; it's about the growth and confidence they're building as athletes."

CHSL Finals Preparation

Looking ahead, the Mustangs are focused on the CHSL Finals on February 14th, where they will compete against Mercy, St. Mary's, and Divine Child. While scheduling can be a challenge during mid-winter break, Coach Braisted is confident in his team's ability to perform. "Maria Burlingame and a few others will bowl well for us," he said, noting that preparation, focus, and consistent effort will be key for success.

Coach Braisted also highlighted a turning point this season — the recent matches against Mercy and St. Mary's. While the team won the matches, close Baker scores showed the girls what it takes to compete at the highest level. "Those matches were eye-opening," he said. "The girls realized that every frame counts, and they've used that experience to elevate their focus for the postseason."

Team Culture and Parent Support

Beyond scores and statistics, the Mustangs' season has been defined by culture and teamwork. With many sophomores on the roster, the team is building a foundation for the next two years. Coach Braisted emphasized the joy and camaraderie among the players. "It's fun and enjoyable, and watching girls improve week to week has been incredible," he said. He also noted the strong parent support, which has helped create a positive, encouraging environment both on and off the lanes.

Lessons and Advice for Younger Bowlers

For younger athletes looking to follow in the Mustangs' footsteps, Coach Braisted offers a simple but powerful message: "Come out and enjoy a lifelong sport, become competitive, see improvements each time you bowl, and learn to make a commitment while being part of a team."

With consistent weekly improvement, standout performances, and a supportive team culture, Marian's bowling team is poised to make a strong showing in the postseason and set the stage for continued success in the coming years.
