University of Detroit Mercy Retires Mary (Lillie) Cicerone’s Jersey, Honoring a Titan Legend
The University of Detroit Mercy women’s basketball program celebrated one of the most influential figures in its history by retiring the No. 20 jersey of Mary (Lillie) Cicerone during halftime of its Senior Day matchup against Northern Kentucky on February 28, 2026. The ceremony served as a powerful tribute to Cicerone’s lasting legacy both on the court as a student-athlete and off the court as one of Michigan’s most accomplished basketball coaches.
With this honor, Cicerone becomes just the second women’s basketball player in Detroit Mercy history to have her jersey retired, joining Cheryl Williams. The recognition highlights not only her outstanding collegiate career, but also the profound impact she has made on generations of athletes throughout the state of Michigan.
A standout guard for the Titans in the early 1980s, Cicerone established herself as one of the premier players in program history. She scored over 1,000 career points and remains among the all-time leaders in assists and steals, ranking third in assists (486) and second in steals (333). Her ability to control the game, elevate her teammates, and compete relentlessly made her a cornerstone of the Detroit Mercy program.
Cicerone’s excellence extended beyond the hardwood. She was named Detroit Mercy Student-Athlete of the Year in 1982, a reflection of her commitment to academics, leadership, and service to the university community. Her time at Detroit Mercy laid the foundation for a career defined by integrity, discipline, and a passion for developing young people through sport.
Following her collegiate playing days, Cicerone built a legendary coaching career at Marian, where she led the varsity girls basketball program for 38 seasons. During her tenure, she compiled an extraordinary 707–233 record, making her the winningest female head coach in Michigan girls basketball history and the fourth-winningest coach overall in Michigan High School Athletic Association history.
Under her leadership, Marian captured six MHSAA state championships, numerous Catholic High School League titles, and consistently competed at the highest level. More importantly, Cicerone became known for shaping not only elite basketball players, but confident, disciplined young women prepared for success beyond the game.
Her influence has been recognized through numerous honors, including induction into the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Hall of Fame, the Catholic High School League Hall of Fame, and Marian High School’s Hall of Fame. She has also been the recipient of the MHSAA Women in Sports Leadership Award, celebrating her impact as a trailblazer and role model.
The retirement of Cicerone’s No. 20 jersey symbolizes the full scope of her legacy — a Titan who excelled as a student-athlete, a coach who set the standard for excellence, and a leader who elevated women’s basketball across the state.
As the banner is raised, Detroit Mercy will honor not only a remarkable career, but a lifetime dedicated to the game and to the development of others. Mary Cicerone’s influence will forever remain woven into the fabric of Titan and Mustang basketball.
