Marian falls to Divine Child at CHSL Pompon Championship
February 9, 2023
BLOOMFIELD HILLS – For the second straight year, Marian High School played host to the Catholic High School League (CHSL) dance and pompon championships.
In the dance team division, Mercy once again captured the crown in the four-team field with an overall score of 329. Lutheran North was runner-up and Shrine (279) and Riverview Gabriel Richard (261) rounded out the scoring.
Mercy's title was their third consecutive. The Marlins also earned a CHSL championship in 2017.
In the pompon division, Marian was also searching for their third consecutive CHSL crown, but with a score of 316, they came up just short of champion Divine Child (328). Lutheran North was third with a score of 314, while Mercy (301), Shrine (284) and St. Catherine of Siena (282) finished fourth through sixth, respectively.
In addition to the competition, the CHSL pom & dance honor teams were announced.
Marian's Alex Hafley and Shannon Snyder earned all-Catholic team honors. Sophia Frye and Lecari Simpson were named all-league and Grace Delano was named all-academic team by the coaches association.
"This wasn't our best performance, which is disappointing," said Alexa Slater, Marian's head pompon coach. "But, we get an opportunity on Sunday to make it all come together."
On Sunday, the pompon season concludes for Marian and the Mustangs will compete in the Class B division of the Mid-American Pom state championship at Eastern Michigan University's George Gervin Game Above Center.
